Two SVVSD Elementary Schools Host Green Apple Day of Service with School Tours

Red Hawk Elementary in Erie and Eagle Crest Elementary in Longmont will host School House Walks during the Green Apple Day of Service – an annual event focused on K-12 schools and celebrated globally. Both elementary schools will showcase their implementation of green, healthy, sustainable initiatives with tours conducted at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 24.

Astronaut visits Erie students with Space Foundation program

Two years ago, after becoming a teacher liaison for The Space Foundation, Kristina Stem vowed to bring an astronaut to Erie Elementary School — and this week she delivered.

Former astronaut Leroy Chiao wowed Erie Elementary students Wednesday with anecdotes about eating and showering at the International Space Station.

Chiao has been to space four times during his career, including a six-month stint as commander of the Space Station.

Space Foundation to Bring NASA Astronaut and STEM Education Program to St. Vrain Valley Schools

The Space Foundation is taking its Space in the Community STEM education program to St. Vrain Valley Schools in February.

Former NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao, Ph.D., will share his experiences in space with students at several St. Vrain Valley Schools in Erie and Longmont, Colo., and will also join a panel discussion for a free public presentation and Star Party on Feb. 17 at Erie High School.

Sphero balls spark Erie students' curiosity

If you've seen the new Star Wars movie, you know the rotund BB-8 is the latest droid character to hit the big screen.

With the popularity of the film, you might guess BB-8 would be an instant hit with elementary school students. That's why Red Hawk Elementary School computer lab teacher Chris Schmitz likes to use a replica toy version of the droid in his teaching in Erie.

Red Hawk awarded grant to continue teacher training on movement

Erie's Red Hawk Elementary recently was awarded a grant to develop an online class for teachers on incorporating more movement into the school day.

The $50,000, two-year Thriving Schools grant from Kaiser Permanente Colorado allows the school to continue work from a previous $100,000, two-year Thriving Schools grant, said Red Hawk Principal Cyrus Weinberger.

"We want to take a very successful model and scale it up," he said.

In the most recent round of Thriving Schools grants, sixteen Colorado school districts will receive a combined $968,080.

Red Hawk Elementary named Green Ribbon School by U.S. Department of Education

Managing Director of the White House Council on Environmental Quality Christy Goldfuss joined U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to announce that Red Hawk Elementary, in Erie, Colorado is among the 2015 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award honorees.

Red Hawk Elementary School was recently recognized by Learning by Design magazgine as a spring 2015 architecture and interor design featured education project.
